Discussion:
System Archiving Products?

Hi folks!

We have an ever growing GW system and I think it's time to start considering
archiving solutions. Our GW system has gobbled up 10 gigs in the last 4
months. I work in a law firm so attorneys tend to be digital pack rats and
keep EVERYTHING! With that said, I began looking at a few products (Gwava
and GWArchive by Messaging Architects).

I'd like to get some feedback on what is the best bang for the buck. We are
a fairly small firm (20 users) so whatever product we go with can't have a
crazy pricetag. I'm looking at something well under $5k.

BTW, we are on GW 6.5.7 but may be going to 7 by year's end.

Thanks,
Tom

Wow 5k all in (I assume that would be the largest currency I can use -
IE Sterling ;-)

In global terms, the four main protagonists are functionally similar,
in no particular order

GWArhive - MA
Retain - GWAVA
MessageManager - CA
Discovery - Nexic

There are others, but these are IMHO the primary 4. MM from CA used
to be very expensive (extra 0 in the price) but now that they are a CA
product, they seem to be much the same as the others.

If you purchase your Open Workgroup Suite upgrade protection from
Novell each year, there is an offer in that you can get Retain for 1
year for free and thereafter only pay maintenance

Assuming that you are not in the UK, the bigger question is not the
cost of the license for the archive software, but what are you
intending to use as the storage system? The software is almost
inconsequential for 20 users when compared with the cost of the
storage to support the solution.

We don't use Open Workgroup Suite so that is out. Is that the Linux
solution from Novell?

For storage solutions I was thinking of a low grade Comaq server with RAID
or NAS. I could also use our old Proliant once we upgrade servers. What is
the reccomened storage solution?

Thanks for the input. Very helpful.

NO, the workgroup Suite is a bundle of NW/OES, GW and the ZEN suite as
one (with a big discount)

On the cheap server mark, if you have a preference for HP, have a look
at the DL320s (note the s on the end) this can hold as many as 12
SATA disks each holding 750GB... If you buy the one without the OS
you can use the server as a SLES box with Retain...

GWArchive and MM both require Windies

Don't know about Discovery...
