and immediately
redirected to the IP address of the live server.
Sounds like your post office is set to client server only. See TID
10068986 for how to get round that. And yes, you need to trim those path
element names back to 8 characters maximum

You mean change your live PO to c/s and direct ?. Well, yes you can do
that, but that doesn't change the wphost.db in the restore area.

To change the restore area settings, then you do need that temporary
domain directory set up, and do the changes as described in the TID. The
main reason is so you are using the other settings from the restore area
PO. For example, the user list may not be the same between live and
restored PO.

Having direct access set is fine *provided* that most users have
absolutely *no* rights to the PO directory structure. It can be useful to
have an account or two with rights so you can use the /ph flag when
needed, and have direct access available to a restore area.

I am able to access the
restore area in the client,
You did restart the POA and the client after making the changes, right ?

The POA reads the restore area location on startup, then the client gets
the info from the POA.

I did restart the POA prior to deleting and recreating the current
Restore Area, and did not make a difference.
Now, provided that restart was after you made the edits in C1 *and* after
that change had made it through to the wphost.db, it should have worked.
It can take a few minutes for changes to pass through the system, but not
that long

Above the line you quoted, you should also see where the POA thinks it is
going - so on my system here it is

15:45:15 23B C/S Login Windows ::GW Id=Dave :: 192.168.201.54
15:45:15 23B User Dave tries to restore from backup location:
OPAL/VOL6:\GW5PO
15:47:47 23B Remote Request From: Dave

Here the restore area is on a separate server to the POA.

How exactly are the paths set in C1.

Hmm, maybe GW8 has improved the messages a bit then. But what you posted
was actually just starting the client, not opening the restore area right ?

If you open the restore area from the client, then on the POA screen, hit
Ctrl-Z, then try and restore a message from the client, then Ctrl-Z on the
POA again (diag logging can get a bit lengthy <g>). You should see
messages about files being locked and restore areas being used

But you are still not getting the restored message back in the live mail
box ?

Is the restore area on the same server as the live PO files ?, if not do
you have the /user /password settings set to something valid in the POA
startup files.

Everything you've done should work with a current version, so maybe it is
just something that has changed or been fixed between 6.5.4 and the GW8.0
that I'm using

And these deleted messages you are trying to restore, they're not still in
the trash of the live account are they ?. That fits the symptoms you are
seeing

Heehee, I'm not a lot better, it just clicked when you said you were using
last nights DBCopy to test with, that you were probably just deleting a
test mail which was then still in the trash :-).

Took a while, but then you did get to fix some other stuff on the way <g>
